Who has never marveled at the profusion of small "golden suns" that light up the gardens and hillsides of the French Riviera ?
A bloom all the more spectacular as it occurs in the heart of winter, a time when most other plants wait for better days to flower...One might think they have been naturally rooted in the Mediterranean maquis forever.
Yet, mimosas (Latin: Acacia) originate from very distant regions, all located in the Southern Hemisphere: Australia, Africa, Chile...
Brought back from travels since the early 19th century, first for their fragrance and later for botanical curiosity, mimosas have conquered our gardens and coastal spaces.Indeed, each cut stem or flower allows Acacia dealbata, the common mimosa, to produce suckers at the root level, enabling the systematic regrowth of a new plant !
Most other species do not have this invasive character and display a wild diversity of foliage, shapes, and sizes, always with those pom-pom-like yellow glomerules as flowers.
